Welcome to Grade 6 Team 6R

Development:  This is a very important time in your child's life.  Early adolescence is a sensitive time when children are struggling with their identity and all those physical and emotional changes that are occurring.  We recognize our students are very unique and welcome the opportunity to be their teachers during this exciting and sometimes unsettling period in their development.  With your help, we will be able to give the children the support they need at this time.  As Middle School teachers, we are very lucky because we have the chance to work with children who are experiencing the second fastest period of brain development in their lives.  We are eager to seize this opportunity!

Homework:  Ichabod Crane Middle School has a homework policy.  Please review it for specific details.  Any time you feel that your child has a valid excuse for not completing a homework assignment, please write a note explaining the situation.  We will accept this without questions, and the assignment will be due the next day.  These notes will be kept on file.  Please do not abuse this policy.  Please help us promote positive homework habits.  Thank you!

Assignment Pad:  Every student has been issued an assignment pad.  Students are required to record their assignments daily.  Please review the assignment pad with your child as often as possible.  Students will be graded periodically on their assignment pad completion.

Attendance:  Regular attendance is very important.  Please avoid unnecessary absences.  Your child will be responsible for all work given while s/he is absent from school.  If a computer is available, you can check our team website at http://www.icms6.org for information regarding assignments.  Students can also check with a responsible classmate or study-buddy.  If your child is going to be absent for more than one day, please call the school at 758-7676 before 9:30 a.m. to request that homework be sent to the office to be brought home by a sibling or picked up by you after dismissal.

Parent Conferences:  All families will receive a notice in early November regarding parent/teacher conferences.  At that time, you will be asked to indicate which times during the conference dates are more convenient for you.  We will do our best to accommodate you.  If you need to speak to the team prior to this, please call the Middle School office between 10:00 - 10:30.  This is our prep time, and someone will be available to speak with you.

RIA & Pull Out:  Reading in Academics (RIA) is the period opposite physical education.  Every other day, when your child does not have gym, s/he is assigned to either a lab, support class, or RIA.  During RIA, students are engaged in teacher-directed reading comprehension instruction.  This is detailed later.  If your child does not participate in band or chorus, s/he goes to a lab, a support period, or pull-out during that period.  During pull-out, students are supervised by a teacher on the team.  It is time to complete homework, get organized, and use the classroom and library resources.  Assignment pads will be checked frequently by pull-out teachers.

Homeroom Partners:  We are exploring a new concept at the Middle School this year by including special area teachers in homeroom time.  Each of the homeroom teachers on the team will have another teacher partnered with them to enhance the homeroom.  That partner will help with the homeroom and hallway supervision of the class as well as proctoring of State exams.  We are excited to have Mrs. Purificato, Mrs. Rieck, Miss Seaver, and Mrs. Two-Axe on board with us this year.  It will be a great opportunity for the children to get to know some of the other teachers in the building.

Communication:  As Mr. Valentine always says, "Communication is the key to success!"  This is our team's belief, and we welcome your notes, e-mails and phone calls.  If you have a concern, we need to resolve it.  We also appreciate information that may help us understand your child better.  If there are factors outside of school such as death, divorce/separation, illness or military deployment effecting him/her, please let us know so that we can be supportive.  Please check our website, http://www.icms6.org regularly for updates if you have access to the internet.  Put a note in the assignment pad, call us at 758-7676, or e-mail us with your questions or concerns.  You can email us through the website or individually at:
